Samsung SSD 850 Pro | Unboxing, Installation Tutorial & Boot-up Times

So, friends, it's been too long since I posted something on this blog. But now, I gotta write this post because, now I realize the importance of having my audience, the blog readers engaged as well as the youtube subscribers. I hope you guys have noticed that I have moved to a new Youtube channel because of some technical difficulties I had in my previous channel

I recently published a video to my new youtube channel which you can watch below.

So, you are probably here, reading this article because you don't want to waste your data. Or you may be interested too. But anyway, let's get into the unboxing.

The main thing that we are gonna cover in this article is "How to Install an SSD in a Laptop". But before we just show you guys how to install an SSD, we are going to show you the exact real-life experience that you are gonna get when buying and installing an SSD.

I know most of you guys who are reading this article are newbies to the hardware section. Most probably, you don't know much about Hardware. And let me say, guys, the hardware is something, not soo difficult. But the truth is that neither am I is perfect in hardware stuff.

So let's get into the unboxing. You can scroll down if you're not interested in reading an unboxing experience. You better watch it in the video I have made(provided above).

The SSD that I am installing in this video and article is a brand new Samsung SSD 850 Pro. But it is definitely your choice to choose from a wide variety of other brands. But the reason why I went for the Samsung SSD, specifically the 850 PRO series is that it is one of the most reliable Solid State Drives in the World. So, I don't have to worry about the reliability. When compared to most of the SSDs available in the market, Samsung's 850 Pro series simply beats them all. It doesn't need an example. Just look at how many years does Samsung provide the warranty for this thing. It is 10 years. So, that simply says it all. That means that Samsung trusts their SSDs. That's how they are able to provide such an eye-whopping (or at least an industry leading) warranty.

So let's get into the unboxing.
When you just look at the pack of the product, it just seems to be good. But I'd prefer a thicker pack if I were at Samsung because, you know, SSDs are highly prone to damage if they fell down. But in here, you can see that Samsung's packing, I mean the box simply doesn't protect the SSD itself. But anyway, it's okay because we're not doing drop tests here. And also, the SSD came in an extremely tough to open, hard to crack well-sealed cardboard box from Amazon. So, It's just okay for me.

When opening the box, you can see that there is nothing much confusing here. Because it is indeed a simple packaging. The first thing that you will see after opening would be the SSD itself. So there is nothing much to worry about.

And also, you can see the Warranty Booklet, Installation Instructions, and CD which has the Samsung's Data Migration Software. I forgot to tell one thing. There is one more thing, which is a pair of Stickers which says "Samsung SSD activated" which is a good thing because I can stick it on my laptop after installing it to show how proud I am to use their SSD! But it is your choice to decide whether to stick it or not. But I did because I like to show it off!

The SSD, at the first sight, looks cool and very premium. I heard someone saying in a review video that the quality of the plastic used in the external parts of this SSD feels very fragile. But anyway, I don't feel it that bad. It may not be as much rugged as they thought. But it definitely feels well-built. I really liked the Metal frame of the SSD which adds up to the premium finish of its design. Samsung did a great job making their flagship SATA SSDs look good enough.

But anyway, the look and style of an SSD don't matter that much because, you know, it's gonna be inside your laptop or CPU, so don't bother much about the design.

When looking at the backside of the SSD, you can see that there is a big sticker right there which shows you all the details you probably need to know including the fact that removing the sticker would void the warranty. But it is okay to have a big sticker on the backside of an SSD because who cares about a sticker when nobody sees it from outside. But let me say that the sticker anyway looks quite cool and PROfessional as they say.

Okay, now let's stop this unboxing crap. I know that it is a boring thing to document the unboxing part of a video in an article. But, I am doing it for those who cannot watch videos.

But anyway, let's move onto the tutorial on how to install the SSD in a laptop.
So, you know you want to upgrade your computer to a Solid State Drive. But you don't know how to migrate to an SSD without running into any trouble.
Download Samsung's Softwares (Data migration, Magician & SSD Firmware) for free from their site : http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools.html
So, you reached the right article, or video. If you really wanna see the live action of how to migrate your data to an SSD and install it on your laptop, then I would prefer watching the video, because it is much more detailed than this article.

The first thing you have to understand is that it is not a hard thing to do. It may be a little bit confusing if you are new to the hardware world. But if you are choosing a Samsung Solid State Drive, you will not run into trouble. Or at least, the chances of getting a Windows blue screen is extremely less. That is because Samsung provides a free data migration software to copy the entire data in your laptop/desktop into your newly bought SSD.

But what if you don't want to copy the entire data but the C drive? You can definitely do that too. The Samsung's data migration software allows you to select the partitions that you want to copy and also allows you to allocate enough space on each partition. You will get the disc to install the Software with a Samsung SSD. But It is better to download it straight from their website because the latest version is always the best one.

But there is one problem: Samsung doesn't provide a Data migration cable which is a must have a thing to do the migration. If you just wanna do a fresh installation of Windows on your SSD, it is okay and you are not gonna need a cable. But most of the people usually want to migrate rather than just use it as an entirely new system. So, I recently bought a Transcend HDD/SSD Enclosure which connects right into my USB 3.0 Port. The reason why you should buy an HDD/SSD enclosure instead of just an SATA to USB 3.0 cable is that you can use the HDD/SSD enclosure even after installing the SSD replacing the currently working HDD. If you are replacing the HDD because of its failure, you don't need an enclosure. But anyway, it is better to go for an enclosure rather than just spending a lot on a cable. Both of these things are exactly the same. The cable doesn't have a casing. That's all. So make sure you have an HDD enclosure.

So let's move into the tutorial.

  1. First of all, install the Data migration software in your laptop/desktop.
  2. Simply connect your SSD to your Laptop/desktop using the HDD/SSD Enclosure.
  3. Open the Samsung Data migration software
  4. Click Start and select your desired partitions to copy.
  5. Click start and then the migration should start.
  6. After completing the copying of data, the software would tell you that the system would shut down within a few seconds.
  7. Do not force power off or do anything else. Just wait for the process to happen.
  8. After the system shuts down and all the indicator LEDs turn off, flip over your laptop and remove the HDD compartment
  9. Take out the HDD Caddy
  10. Remove the HDD
  11. Replace it with your new SSD
  12. Put the Caddy back and boot up.
After booting up, I wanted to know how fast my computer became because of the new Solid State Drive.
But you have to make sure one thing not to worry about that the first boot after installing an SSD may take a little more time than usual. But it is okay. After the first boot completes, just install Samsung Magician Software and Enable RAPID Mode for max boot speeds. So that your computer would boot-up in seconds.

I hope this tutorial helped. If it did, don't forget to watch the video version for more detailed instructions and better understanding. Also, make sure to SUBSCRIBE to our new Youtube channel, So that you won't miss our next interesting tech videos.

My laptop now boots-up within 15 seconds (approx.)Let me know how fast is yours in the comments.
